Sketch involving an RP character I plan to use later on, that I've been working on the past week or so during school.

To be honest, I've lost nearly all motivation in The Sea of Dreamland. The drawings are crappy, the plot is 1-d, the characterization is nonspecific and everyone acts the same yadda yadda yadda. It overall sucks. (Though, I have done MUCH worse...)

Recently I've been trying to actually improve my art skills. This is my attempt at adding.. detail? Sorta. I really have no idea how to draw, like, folds in clothes or shading and stuff. And even worse, even if I could draw them, I don't know where I would put them. Is there some kind of trick to it? I have no idea.

Another problem is... it really looks 2-d, doesn't it? Her head is supposed to kinda leaning out, otherwise the sun-spikes on her mask would dig into her shoulders, but I don't know how to show that, other than making it slightly bigger.

Anyway, if anyone's got some tips on this, or a tutorial or two, lemme know. It'd be a real help.

PS: I got a good grade on my dream house assignment. Yay me.

If you really want to learn how to draw, the quickest way is to try to copy reality.

If I'm being perfectly honest, I DON'T put folds in my sketches because I'm afraid I'll mess them up. I mean, like, not wrinkles and whatnot. And anyway that's way too in depth for me. Apparently a good tip for shading is to identify a light source first, like, where is light coming from, and then draw your shading things on the other side of that. I think. I dunno, I learned that like three years ago when I was into spriting and whatnot (which I suck at.)

As for the head? I think maybe if you placed it a bit lower, like, not really make the neck so visible, you'd be able to give the impression that she's hunched over like a hunchback, which is, I guess, leaning forward. In a way.

In addition - and this is just me - if you use mechanical pencils, the picture usually ends up a lot neater looking. I personally use nothing but mechanical pencils because I'm a dork like that, but try it, it might turn out pretty okay actually. Although shading with them is a problem, because in order to make the shading look good you have to get it so that one side of the pencil tip is all sloped, like, the tip is a sort of trapezoid shape I guess, and then rub the longer diagonal side against the paper. If you try to shade with the tip of the pencil it usually ends up looking like crap.

As for the character herself? She's pretty interesting looking. If you were going for the sort of monster robot zombie in poverty look, I'd say you've got it. I think it would be cool if she became a pirate (or maybe a cloud pirate) but that's just me.

I was hoping the head tubes and lumpy skin would make that clear.

Anyway, yeah, I guess putting the head more down and removing the neck would make it more hunchback-looking.
